I have over 40 years experience working with students, assisting them in learning at their own pace. No child is "stupid" or "unteachable", you just have to be able to connect with the child to see how they learn best. Some children are very "hands on" while others just want to be directed and it is the tutor's job to quickly assess what works best with each child. Children have a natural enthusiasm and affinity to want to learn; once you can get them directed to the right way to do it they excel. There is a great deal of repetition in tutoring so it does require a lot of patience and understanding on the tutor's part, as well as the parents, but once the child "connects" and excels you can see it in their faces, demeanor, and self esteem. Peer pressure is one of the pitfalls of having a tutor, many children don't want that stigma put on them. They do not understand needing a tutor is not bad for them, not using one when it is needed is far worse. I have never had a child that ever said having a tutor did nothing for them, but I have been told over and over how glad they were they had the help they needed as it made it so much easier for them once they were on their own again.
